# VestStudio — portfolio construction and planning

> VestStudio is Vestmind's portfolio construction product. It turns an investor's goals, horizon and risk capacity into a target portfolio, then lets them simulate a change — a new allocation, a fund switch, a rebalance — and see its effect on risk, concentration and goal funding before any money moves.

Analysis tells an investor what is wrong. It does not tell them what to hold instead, and it does not show what a proposed fix would do to everything else. VestStudio is the second half of that: a target portfolio built from goals, horizon and risk capacity, and a place to simulate a change and see its effect on risk, concentration, tax and goal funding before any money moves.

## What VestStudio looks at

- **Goals and horizon.** What the money is for and when it is needed, which is what sets the allocation.
- **Risk capacity.** How much loss the plan can absorb without failing — distinct from how much volatility the investor can tolerate.
- **Current portfolio.** What is held now, so the plan is a route from here rather than a design in the abstract.
- **Tax position.** Holding periods and embedded gains, because a change that is right on paper can be wrong after tax.
- **Instrument choice.** Which funds or instruments fill each sleeve of the allocation.

## What VestStudio does

- **Target allocation.** An equity, debt, gold and cash mix derived from goals, horizon and risk capacity rather than from a risk questionnaire score.
- **Instrument selection.** Specific funds or instruments proposed for each sleeve, with the reason each was chosen.
- **Simulate a change.** Apply a switch, an addition or a rebalance and see the effect on concentration, overlap, allocation and goal funding before committing.
- **Rebalancing plans.** A sequence of moves that reaches the target, ordered to limit tax and transaction cost.
- **Goal funding.** Each goal projected against the plan, so a shortfall is visible while there is still time to act on it.
- **Reasoning.** Every recommendation carries the reason and the numbers it rests on.

## How VestStudio works

1. **Establish the objective.** Goals, amounts, dates and priority are recorded as separate liabilities.
2. **Set risk capacity.** The horizon of each goal and the household's ability to absorb a drawdown determine how much equity the plan can carry.
3. **Derive the allocation.** A target mix is derived from those constraints, not from a score on a questionnaire.
4. **Select instruments.** Each sleeve is filled with instruments chosen for mandate fit, cost and the overlap they would create with what is already held.
5. **Route from here.** The plan is expressed as moves from the current portfolio, ordered to limit tax and cost.
6. **Test before committing.** Any proposed change is re-analysed against the whole portfolio before it is recommended.

## Who VestStudio is for

- **Starting from a goal.** You know what the money is for — a home, an education, independence — and want a portfolio built for it rather than assembled fund by fund.
- **A portfolio that grew by accident.** Your holdings reflect years of separate decisions, and you want a target to steer back towards.
- **Before a rebalance.** You want to see the tax cost and the effect on risk of a change before placing a single order.
- **Weighing two paths.** You are choosing between a more aggressive and a more conservative plan, and want to see what each does to your goals.

## VestStudio in practice (illustrative example)

**An illustrative plan for a 34-year-old.** A ₹30 lakh portfolio, ₹60,000 invested a month, a ₹40 lakh home deposit due in six years, and financial independence targeted at 50.

- **65 / 25 / 5 / 5 target equity, debt, gold and cash.** Built from the two goals and their horizons rather than from age alone; the home deposit is funded from its own lower-risk sleeve.
- **₹3 lakh switch simulated before it is made.** Moving ₹3 lakh from one of two overlapping large-cap funds into an index fund, with the change in overlap, cost and risk shown first.
- **₹0 estimated tax on that switch.** The units sold were held for over a year, and the gain sits inside the ₹1.25 lakh annual equity LTCG exemption — assuming no other gains are realised that year.
- **Year 6 home deposit funded.** At the planned contributions, the deposit sleeve reaches ₹40 lakh in the year it is needed.

Every recommendation arrives with its reasoning, its tax cost and its effect on risk, and nothing moves until you decide it should.

## VestStudio compared with the alternatives

| Approach | What it tells you | What it cannot see |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Robo-advisor | A model portfolio from a questionnaire, usually built from its own funds. | Your existing holdings, the tax cost of moving to the model, and goals with different horizons. |
| Goal calculator | How much to invest each month for one goal. | Which instruments to hold, how goals interact, and the risk of the plan as a whole. |
| Spreadsheet plan | Whatever assumptions you enter. | Look-through overlap, tax-aware rebalancing and simulating a change before making it. |
| SEBI-registered investment adviser | Personalised, regulated advice. | Nothing in principle — VestStudio can be used alongside one. |
| VestStudio | A target portfolio from your goals and risk capacity, and the effect of any change on risk, concentration, tax and goal funding before you make it. | Execution: VestStudio never places an order. |

## Your data

- **Read-only by construction.** Vestmind reads holdings, positions and balances. No broker adapter implements an order method, so there is no code path that could buy, sell or move anything.
- **Secrets stay on the server.** Broker API secrets and access tokens never reach your browser, and the page never calls a broker directly. The exchange happens between Vestmind's servers and the broker.
- **Not sold, not shared.** Portfolio data is used to produce your analysis and is never sold. It is shared only with the providers needed to deliver the service, such as your broker, or where the law requires.
- **Your control.** Connect or disconnect any source, update your information, download your data or request deletion at any time.

## Common questions about VestStudio

### What is VestStudio?

VestStudio is Vestmind's portfolio construction product. It turns an investor's goals, horizon and risk capacity into a target portfolio, then lets them simulate a change — a new allocation, a fund switch, a rebalance — and see its effect on risk, concentration and goal funding before any money moves.

### How should I rebalance my portfolio?

Back to a target allocation you set deliberately, on a trigger rather than a calendar, and in the order that costs least. The trigger most portfolios can use is a band: rebalance when an asset class is more than five percentage points away from its target, rather than every quarter regardless. The order matters because selling an appreciated equity holding realises tax, while directing new contributions into the underweight sleeve does not — VestStudio sequences a rebalance to use new money first and sales last.

### How does VestStudio decide an asset allocation?

From the goals and their dates, and from how much drawdown the plan can absorb without failing. A goal three years away cannot carry much equity whatever the investor's appetite; a goal twenty years away should carry a lot. The allocation is the aggregate of those constraints, which is why it is derived rather than chosen from a questionnaire score.

### Can I test a change before making it?

Yes — that is what the studio is for. A proposed switch, addition or rebalance is applied to a copy of the portfolio and re-analysed in full, so the effect on concentration, overlap, allocation and goal funding is visible before anything is transacted.

### Does VestStudio account for tax?

Yes. Holding periods and embedded gains are read from the portfolio, and a rebalancing plan is ordered to use new contributions and loss harvesting before realising gains. A change that is right before tax and wrong after it is a change VestStudio should not be recommending.

### Is this investment advice?

No. Vestmind is not a registered investment adviser. VestStudio produces analysis and scenarios with the reasoning shown, for the investor to act on or not. Nothing it produces is a personalised recommendation within the meaning of the SEBI investment adviser regulations.

### How is VestStudio different from a robo-advisor?

A robo-advisor allocates money it takes custody of, according to a model it does not show you. VestStudio designs and tests a portfolio you hold and transact yourself, and shows the reasoning for every part of it. It does not execute, hold assets, or earn from the instruments it proposes.

### What does VestStudio need to build a plan?

Goals with amounts and dates, an investment horizon, current holdings if there are any, and monthly investment capacity. The more of the current portfolio it can read, the more the plan is a route from where the investor actually is.

### Who is VestStudio for?

Investors who know roughly what they hold and want to decide what they should hold — and investors who have a finding from VestFolio and want to see what fixing it would do to everything else.

### How often should a plan be revisited?

When something changes: income, a goal, a horizon, or an allocation that has drifted past its band. VestMonitor watches for the last of those continuously so that revisiting the plan is prompted by a reason rather than by a date.
