# VestFolio — AI portfolio analysis

> VestFolio is Vestmind's AI portfolio analysis product. It reads an Indian investor's holdings — stocks, mutual funds and ETFs — and reports what the portfolio is actually exposed to: concentration, mutual fund overlap, sector and factor tilts, asset allocation drift and the risks those create.

A portfolio tracker answers "what do I own and what is it worth today". VestFolio answers the question after that: given what you own, what are you actually exposed to, where is that exposure larger than you think, and which of it is worth doing something about. Those are different questions, and the second one needs the underlying holdings of every fund you own, not just its name and its NAV.

## What VestFolio looks at

- **Direct equity.** Listed Indian stocks, by weight, sector, market capitalisation and the quality of the business behind them.
- **Mutual funds.** Equity, debt and hybrid schemes, looked through to the securities they actually hold.
- **ETFs and index funds.** Treated as the index exposure they are, so an index fund and a large-cap active fund are compared on what they hold.
- **Asset allocation.** The split across equity, debt, gold, cash and anything else held, against an allocation suitable for the investor.
- **Cash and idle balances.** Counted, because an allocation that ignores uninvested cash overstates how invested a portfolio is.

## What VestFolio does

- **Concentration.** Single-stock, single-fund, single-sector and single-AMC concentration, measured on look-through weights rather than on the number of line items.
- **Mutual fund overlap.** How much of any two funds is the same underlying securities, and how much of the whole portfolio sits in the handful of companies several funds all hold.
- **Sector and factor exposure.** Where the portfolio is tilted — financials, IT, large-cap, momentum — and whether that tilt was chosen or accumulated.
- **Allocation drift.** How far the portfolio has moved from its intended allocation, and what moved it.
- **Risk findings.** Each finding stated with the holdings that produced it, so it can be checked rather than believed.
- **Portfolio quality.** The financial quality of what is held, aggregated to the portfolio level rather than reported stock by stock.

## How VestFolio works

1. **Import.** Connect Zerodha, Angel One or Groww, or upload a CAS or a broker statement. Holdings are normalised to instruments with identifiers, not to names typed on a statement.
2. **Look through.** Every mutual fund and ETF is resolved to its disclosed portfolio, so a fund is analysed as the securities it holds rather than as a single line.
3. **Aggregate.** Look-through weights are summed across the whole portfolio. A company held directly and through three funds is one exposure, and this is the step where it becomes one number.
4. **Measure.** Concentration, overlap, sector and factor exposure and allocation drift are computed against the aggregated weights.
5. **Interpret.** Each measurement is compared against a threshold appropriate to the investor rather than to a universal rule, and only what crosses one becomes a finding.
6. **Explain.** Every finding carries the holdings that caused it and the number behind it.

## Who VestFolio is for

- **Several funds, bought over the years.** You hold five or more mutual funds picked at different times, and want to know whether they add up to a plan or to the same large-cap exposure several times over.
- **Stocks alongside funds.** You own companies directly and through your funds, and want the combined weight of each one rather than two separate lists.
- **A portfolio split across apps.** Your holdings sit across Zerodha, Groww, Angel One and a CAS, and no single screen shows the whole of it.
- **Before a review or a switch.** You are about to consolidate, rebalance or speak to an adviser, and want an independent reading of what is there first.

## VestFolio in practice (illustrative example)

**An illustrative ₹25 lakh portfolio.** Four equity mutual funds — two large-cap funds, a flexi-cap fund and a Nifty 50 index fund — and six directly held stocks, imported from a CAS and a Zerodha connection.

- **9.4% of the portfolio is one bank.** The largest direct holding is 4% of the portfolio. Looked through, the same bank is a top holding of all four funds too, and the combined weight is more than twice what the statement suggests.
- **72% overlap between the two large-cap funds.** Above the roughly 70% at which two funds are substantially the same exposure — two expense ratios for largely one portfolio.
- **36% of equity in financial services.** Accumulated through the funds rather than chosen: no single holding on the statement looks like a sector bet.
- **+11 pts equity above the intended allocation.** After a strong year equity is 81% of the portfolio, against the 70% it was meant to be.

Nothing on the original statement looked concentrated. Every one of these findings comes from looking through the funds to what they hold, and each is shown with the holdings that produce it.

## VestFolio compared with the alternatives

| Approach | What it tells you | What it cannot see |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Broker app or portfolio tracker | What you own at that broker, and what it is worth today. | What your funds hold, the overlap between them, and holdings kept anywhere else. |
| Spreadsheet | Whatever you build and keep up to date by hand. | Look-through weights, unless you reconcile every fund's monthly portfolio disclosure yourself. |
| Standalone overlap checker | The overlap between two or three funds you select. | Direct stocks, asset allocation and the portfolio as a whole. |
| SEBI-registered investment adviser | Personalised advice, with a duty to act in your interest. | Nothing in principle — but a review is periodic and priced accordingly. |
| VestFolio | What the whole portfolio is exposed to, across brokers and statements, with the holdings behind every finding. | Personalised advice: Vestmind is not a registered investment adviser. |

## Your data

- **Read-only by construction.** Vestmind reads holdings, positions and balances. No broker adapter implements an order method, so there is no code path that could buy, sell or move anything.
- **Secrets stay on the server.** Broker API secrets and access tokens never reach your browser, and the page never calls a broker directly. The exchange happens between Vestmind's servers and the broker.
- **Not sold, not shared.** Portfolio data is used to produce your analysis and is never sold. It is shared only with the providers needed to deliver the service, such as your broker, or where the law requires.
- **Your control.** Connect or disconnect any source, update your information, download your data or request deletion at any time.

## Common questions about VestFolio

### What is VestFolio?

VestFolio is Vestmind's AI portfolio analysis product. It reads an Indian investor's holdings — stocks, mutual funds and ETFs — and reports what the portfolio is actually exposed to: concentration, mutual fund overlap, sector and factor tilts, asset allocation drift and the risks those create. It is free to run an analysis and needs no advisory relationship.

### What does VestFolio analyse?

Listed Indian equities, mutual funds across equity, debt and hybrid categories, ETFs and index funds, gold, and cash or idle balances. Funds are looked through to their disclosed holdings, so the analysis is performed on the securities actually owned rather than on the names of the schemes.

### How does VestFolio analyse your portfolio?

In five steps: it imports holdings from a broker connection, a CAS or a statement; resolves every fund and ETF to its underlying securities; aggregates look-through weights across the whole portfolio; measures concentration, overlap, exposure and allocation drift against those weights; and reports only what crosses a threshold appropriate to that investor, with the holdings and numbers behind each finding shown.

### What assets can VestFolio analyse?

Indian listed equity, equity and debt mutual funds, hybrid funds, ETFs and index funds, gold funds and ETFs, and cash. Unlisted holdings, physical assets and foreign securities can be recorded for allocation purposes but are not analysed at the security level.

### How does VestFolio identify concentration?

By summing look-through weights rather than counting positions. A company held directly and inside several funds is one exposure; VestFolio adds those weights together and reports the total. Concentration is then assessed at four levels — single stock, single fund, single sector and single fund house — because a portfolio can be diversified at one level and concentrated at another.

### How does VestFolio identify mutual fund overlap?

It compares the disclosed holdings of each pair of funds and reports the share of portfolio weight the two have in common, then aggregates across the whole portfolio to show how much of it sits in the securities that several funds hold simultaneously. Overlap is measured on weight, not on the count of common names: two funds sharing thirty small positions matter less than two funds whose largest five holdings are identical.

### What portfolio risks can VestFolio detect?

Single-stock and single-sector concentration, mutual fund overlap that hides concentration behind apparent diversification, allocation drift away from the intended mix, an equity share inconsistent with the investor's horizon, duplicated fund mandates, factor crowding, and liquidity or credit risk in the debt portion of the portfolio.

### How is VestFolio different from a portfolio tracker?

A tracker reports what you own and what it is worth. VestFolio reports what you are exposed to and what that exposure implies. The difference is look-through: a tracker treats a mutual fund as one line, VestFolio treats it as the securities it holds, which is the only way overlap, true concentration and real sector exposure can be seen at all.

### Who is VestFolio for?

Indian investors managing their own portfolios who have accumulated enough holdings that the portfolio's behaviour is no longer obvious from looking at it — typically several mutual funds bought at different times, some direct equity, and no single view of what the combination adds up to.

### How does Vestmind handle financial data?

Holdings are used to produce the analysis and are visible only to the account that owns them. Vestmind does not execute trades, does not take custody of assets, and does not sell or share portfolio data. Broker connections are read-only. What is retained, and how to delete it, is set out in the privacy policy.
